Junior Buyer, Denim & Activewear – fixed term secondment for 11-months

A rare and exciting new internal opportunity to progress your career within David Jones, by joining the Womenswear, Footwear and Accessories business as a Junior Buyer on a secondment within the denim, active, swim & imports Buyership.  

The Junior Buyer role serves to provide an upwards “stepping stone” to facilitate the next step in your career within David Jones. By empowering our team to hold full accountability for a revenue driven portfolio and establishing a mentor relationship with a dedicated Buyer, the program allows for tangible experience to be achieved to facilitate your development. 

As a Junior Buyer, you will be accountable for achieving profitable sales through the planning and acquisition of merchandise assortments within the department that deliver on-trend and inspirational product ranges relevant to our customers, aligning with our brand and strategy.

This role will have the support and mentorship provided from the department’s Buyer to enhance your professional development.

What does the role involve?

  • Accountability for department financial KPI’s – Achieve sales, GP dollars, GMROI and stock turn product targets
  • Drive range selections for brands with planner support to create compelling and commercial range assortments for customer
  • Monitor product performance and take trade actions as necessary
  • Raise orders and manage deliveries
  • Develop effective relationships with approved suppliers and negotiate on-boarding of new suppliers and vendors where aligned to the merchandise strategy
  • Manage department vendor trading terms with mentor buyer support to ensure optimal commercial outcomes for David Jones
  • Develop brand and department strategy in line with merchandise strategy
  • Trend analysis for new to market trends, new to market brands – ensuring David Jones is delivering inspirational ranges for our customer
  • Present and make actions from post seasonal trade review to brands
  • Manage core/ASR ranging and supply
  • Working with the vendors on limited product development
  • Guide and mentor direct report/s and their teams to drive engagement, healthy succession and maximum individual productivity
  • Work effectively within the wider team

What are we looking for?

  • Demonstrated experience operating as a Buyer’s Assistant, or similar position with ample transferable skills and experience
  • Advanced usage of Microsoft Excel and other MS programs
  • A collaborative team player, with a proactive mindset, who is comfortable stepping up to support the wider team
  • Proven capabilities at delivering to tight timeframes and experience working within a fast-paced environment, whilst balancing competing interests
  • Experience building strong supplier relationships, with a proven ability to negotiate with the best interest of the business
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills with the ability to read and analyse reports
  • Strong retail and commercial acumen
  • Experience in the end to end buying lifecycle
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders internally and externally
